Paclitaxel Injection (with polyoxyethylated castor oil) is used along or along with other chemotherapy medications to treat breast cancer, ovarian cancer (cancer that begins in the female reproductive organs where eggs are formed), and non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC).

Paclitaxel Injection was first isolated in 1971 from the Pacific yew and approved for medical use in 1993. It is on the World Health Organization’s List of Essential Medicines.

What is paclitaxel used for?

Paclitaxel injection is a prescription medicine indicated:

  • Together with other medications in order to treat primary breast cancer (cancer that has not spread beyond the breast or the lymph nodes under the arm) or it can be given as the part of a clinical trial for the primary breast cancer.
  • Alone or with other chemotherapy or anti-cancer drugs in order to treat breast cancer that has spread to areas around the breast such as the lymph nodes above or below the collarbone or to other organs of the body (secondary breast cancer). 
  • For the treatment of ovarian cancer

    Care should be exercised in the handling of this drug. PACLIALL injection should not be opened or crushed. Should be Retained in the original package in order to protect from the light. Store the vials in original cartons between 20°–25° C (68°–77° F).


    Paclitaxel should be given as a drip into the vein (intravenously) in the arm or hand, although there are several other ways of giving it depending on the factors such as how simple it is for chemotherapy staff in order to find out the suitable veins and your preferences. It should be given over 3 hours once every 21 days, or once every 14 days (known as the accelerated or dose dense), or it can be given weekly in lower doses over one hour. The time gap between each cycle of the treatment will provide your body in order to recover properly, and can vary depending on whether the number of blood cells has returned to the normal between each cycle.


    Most common adverse reactions include low red blood cell count (anemia), feeling weak or tired, hair loss, numbness, tingling, or burning in hands or feet, joint and muscle pain, trouble breathing, trouble swallowing, hives (raised bumps), rash, diarrhea, mouth or lip sores, (mucositis), infections, nausea, swelling of the hands, feet or face, vomiting, bleeding events, irritation at the injection site, low blood pressure (hypotension).


    • The use of this drug should be avoided in people who have allergic reactions to any of its ingredients.
    • Before taking paclitaxel, discuss with your doctor if you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant.
    • Discuss with your doctor, if you plan to breast-feed or breastfeeding. You together with your doctor should determine if you will take pacliall or breast-feed.
    • This medication should be avoided if you have low white blood cell counts.
    • You should not receive paclitaxel if you are allergic to medicines containing Cremophor.
    • Patients must be informed if they are being given other chemotherapy or anti-cancer drugs with paclitaxel, they may have additional side effects from these drugs.
    • Caution must be exercised when this medicine is concomitantly administered with the known substrates for instance repaglinide and rosiglitazone, inhibitors for instance gemfibrozil, and inducers for instance rifampin of CYP2C8.
    • For monitoring the occurrence of myelotoxicity, frequent peripheral blood cell counts must be performed on all the patients taking paclitaxel dose.
